Saturday, Oct. 10

Ok…I guess I really have lost my mind! I woke up at the usual 5:30 AM to go on the final team run and guess what….I woke up to snow on the ground and snow still coming down!!! AND…it was 24 freakin’ degrees!!! So here’s what it looked like as I drove to the Mopac to meet Rachel:

When I got to the trail, I bundled up with gloves, 180 ear muffs or pods or whatever they are called, buut wearing them didn’t work out so well because I couldn’t hear my pace watch with them on…so after a few miles I took them off and my ears were just cold. The trail was covered with snow at first but we just plowed through. Here’s a picture of the start of the trail a bit later when the snow had melted some:

It was a beautiful run with the snow covering the cornfields and trees….but it sure was brisk! Another view from the trail:

Even with the snow I had a decent run of 10 miles in 2 hours and 38 minutes (15.8 min/mile). Boy…my hips felt it today…I guess it was the cold weather. It was sad that it was the final training run with Rachel, but we’re going to get together after the marathons…she is going to the San Francisco marathon the same weekend as the Des Moines one. So I came home and took another ice bath…not exactly what you want to do early on a Saturday morning after running in the snow for 2 ½ freezing hours! I sat in the ice tub with a sweatshirt on, drinking some hot apple cider, and doing a crossword puzzle (it helps pass the 25 min. in the tub). After that, I had to work the rest of the afternoon. Leo came to work with me and it helped pass the time. We were waiting to hear how Sara did today on her 100 mile bike ride and SHE DID IT!!! TOTALLY AWESOME!!! Oh…and last week she was named athlete of the week with Team in Training!! Way to go, Sara! And…she was the 6th highest fundraiser of all the TNT participants in the Century Ride, thanks to all of you who have donated to the cause!!
I can only include 3 photos per post…so I’m going to add 2 more pictures on the next post…but they are pictures of today’s run.
